Essential Guitar: 33 Guitar Masterpieces

Customer Review: Most amazing, calming collection of classic guitar music around!
This has been one of my favorite CD's for a long time. So much so, I bought a copy for my new boyfriend [I was afraid he might want to borrow my copy and not give it back ;-) ] And the most special little nugget on this CD is the Theme from the Deer Hunter. This nearly brings me to tears every time I hear it. So moving and powerful. If you enjoy classical guitar, You will love this collection.
Customer Review: Excellent mix, good performances
While I always prefer CDs featuring a few composers, having a focus, this CD does a great job at going from all the medley of essential guitar pieces. It's got all the ones I'd like to have, in that sense "Essential" is correct. The recordings are good, I knew about half/two thirds of the pieces, and I'm not always wowed but never disappointed by the performances, in some cases very pleasantly surprised, esp. those by Eduardo Fernandez, Nicola Hall, and Pepe Romero. A discovery: the Estudio Brilliante, by Allard (end of CD2). I really like to put this CD in the background at work (on iPod), at home. My wife is a professional musician (violin) and cringes at bad performances and isn't interested in average usually, so it's telling that she also likes this CD. In fact, it's soothing and relaxing enough that it's actually put her to sleep once! Overall, I really like two thirds of the pieces on this CD, the other ones are nice enough (I'll play through, but won't select them expressly), and there are a few great ones. And the price is great. What's not to like?

Despite the other music genres they play, they become one of the most popular alternative rock bands in the world during the 1990s and have sold millions of albums. In fact, a count done in 2004 calculates that The Cure has sold about 27 million albums since it first formed in 1976. Throughout the life of the band, they have been quick in releasing numerous albums. Looking at the fact that The Cure has released a total of 12 albums and 30 singles in the last two years would prove to just about anyone that they are constantly working on their music. When looking at the history of the band, one can see that they have gone through a number of phases where they focus more on one genre than any other, such as their gothic phase during the early 1980s and the alternative rock phase after 1990. It appears, however, that after their change to alternative rock, they have continued to focus more on that particular genre, quite possibly because it is the more popular genre today. While many still enjoy the other genres, alternative rock is appealing to more of the population than the other genres.

The Alternative Music Played by The Cure

From the time the band was formed until 2008, The Cure had been successful in releasing a total of 13 studio albums that continue to sell, even though all none of the original band has remained, with the exception of Robert Smith. The other current members of the band include Simon Gallup, who has been with the band since 1979, though he took a break from the band in the early 1980s, Porl Thompson, who has been with the band since 1976, and Jason Cooper, who is the newest member after joining in 1995. Aside from the four current members, The Cure has seen eight other members come and go, such as Lol Tolhurst, Michael Dempsey, Perry Bamonte and Roger O'Donnell, to name a few. Each member had their own reasons for leaving the band, such as a loss of interest or the want to search for other interests outside of The Cure. The change in members does not appear to have slowed The Cure down much, if at all. Aside from the music they have put out over the decades, they have completed music videos and have won a few awards. They have been successful for the last thirty years and they will probably continue to be successful until the time comes when the band will dissolve.

Leona Lewis - UK Pop Diva Takes the US by Storm

Leona Lewis - UK Pop Diva Takes the US by Storm

While Lewis' angelic image and friendly demeanor paint an innocent personality, her flaming voice and confident stage presence reveals the diva within, as Simon Cowell observed in her rendering of "Summertime" during her rise to "X Factor" stardom.

Branching out from the UK to the US, Leona Lewis matures into a first class artist from her humble "X Factor" talent-show days. Her debut album, Spirit, marks the first time ever that any British artist bowed on the U.S. chart at No. 1.

It's apparent that no pressure was too great for Ms. Lewis. She proved to herself, her hometown of Highbury, London, and to a worldwide audience that nothing will hold her back. "Bleeding Love," her second single, surpassed competing songs to become an international hit, in the United Kingdom, France and the United States, as Spirit, under the direction of Clive Davis and Simon Cowell, ascended to No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart in April 2008. This triumph should not be taken for granted as previous winners of "American Idol," the UK's version of the "X Factor," have learned that winning a talent show doesn't guarantee a successful career.

The vocal performance on Spirit, demonstrates that Lewis can entertain like a trendy pop star and belt like a big-ballad vocalist, in the style Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston-a good combination to have; being that most pop singers tend to capture only one of those qualities.

What is next for this rising star? After winning "X Factor" and achieving a No. 1 album and single, the bar has been raised very high for Ms. Lewis. However, she already confirmed that she's not a quitter and defied logic when she burst into the industry at the lowest point of her pre-musical career. So, there's no doubt that Leona Lewis will reach for the stars again.
